Housing Families

"Housing Families is an organization that helps homeless families and the needy. In Housing Families, they have a program that helps kids with homework. Also, they talk to kids about how they feel. The people here are fun, funny, and nice. Housing Families is a good way to make friends with kids of the same age as yourself and maybe they will have the same problem."

Housing Families' Girls' Group

"I like to come to Housing Families mostly because of girls' group. I like telling my friends here how I feel and I like to hear what they feel. We also do projects which are very fun. I have been coming here for maybe three years and I have said hello and good bye to lots of people. I have so much fun here. A girl who has been coming for a long time is like a sister to me. I can tell her anything She is great. If you ever meet her, she is really nice and funny. A lot of people are. This is why I like coming to Housing Families..."

Out in the streets

There are times when kids are made fun of for their clothes or for how they look like. That's common in the lives of kids and teenagers. Everybody knows the pain of how that feels. But not just anybody know the disappointment and pain some kids around the world feel when they realize that they don't have a home or a place to sleep. Doesn't everybody like to be at home, feeling warm next to their family? Some people don't even have enough clothes to wear. Lucky for them, there is an organization called Housing Families that helps those who don't have any money and don't have anywhere else to go. Housing Families provides the family with a home and help with their search for housing, help, especially to those with children, section 8 or something similar that help families with low income to pay rent. It's a temporary shelter that offers their help.

Housing Families isn't all about being homeless. They have kids group once a week to spend some time with the kids that serves as a counseling session. It's a time and place where the kids can freely open their mind and get away from the world. Some things that they do there are things such as painting, drawing, coloring, playing games or making jewelry with beads. They also have 7 tutoring sessions every week to help kids with homework or any school subject they need help with. Volunteers come in from all over the city and help with the tutoring. Kids are in the office for an hour or two. If decided to stay for 2 hrs and worked enough, they get a choice of playing a game with their tutor, practice their math skills or have a free time on the computer. The kid's age range from 5-15 and they like to come to the group and tutoring session because they can interact with other kids their age and have fun at the same time they are learning.

I have been involved with Housing Families for about 4 years. I come for group, tutoring, and sometimes to tutor. I've spent time with most staff that it feels like family and that if there's something wrong going on in my head I can tell them. I'm 15 years old and I'm glad that such organization exists in the world to help others that weren't as successful in life as others.
