Volunteer With Kids

Thanks so much for your interest in volunteering for Housing Families Inc.! We are currently seeking volunteers to work in our children's program. There are a few ways to get involved.
- We have an after school tutoring program in which volunteers work one on one with students, helping with homework and providing extra academic support. We provide training and support for volunteers. We currently need volunteers Monday - Thursday afternoons from 3-6 PM. We ask a minimum commitment of one day per week for an hour, though some volunteers give more time than that.
- Childcare volunteers play with preschool children during parents' workshops, counseling sessions and support groups. Hours vary; generally weekday mornings, occasional evening opportunities.
Volunteers recently told us what they felt were the best parts of the program:
- "I think the children get a lot of praise and encouragement from being in the program. we bring the caring side to the children to let them know they can do things that they think they can't. Some of these children need to be fortified with praise - they have been through a lot and I think this program gives them confidence in themselves"
- "The kids get a feeling that someone is listening to them and that someone cares about them. Also hopefully they get the feeling that there are people who appreciate their hard work."
- "A sense that there's a safe place filled with people who believe in education, who believe in them, and who are specifically there to help them learn. Hopefully they also gain a better understanding of their coursework, and in the end gain a better sense of self"
