Housing Families, Inc. celebrates with A Family Affair 25th Anniversary Gala

Nonprofit organization Housing Families Inc. (HFI) celebrated with “A Family Affair 25th Anniversary Gala” at Boston’s Seaport Hotel on Saturday, November 10. The event featured food prepared by celebrity chefs Tiffani Faison, Andy Husbands, Marc Orfaly, Jason Santos, Michael Schlow, and Jeremy Sewall. American Idol finalist Siobhan Magus performed at the gala.

Housing Families ‘A Family Affair’ 25th Anniversary Gala

Homeless children are sick four times more than other children, go without meals twice as much, have high obesity rates because of poor nutrition, and are two times more likely to have learning disabilities. By 12-year-old, 83% of children without homes witness a severe, violent act; over 92% of homeless mothers experience serious physical and/or sexual abuse; 63% of that abuse is by someone they know intimately.

Housing Families, Inc. provides a safe haven for Revere's homeless

As homelessness continues on an upward trend due to home foreclosures and the sluggish economy, one local organization is doing all it can to aid those in need.

For 25 years, Housing Families Inc., a Malden-based nonprofit company, has provided emergency housing and eviction prevention services for 105 families spread throughout Everett, Malden, Medford, and Revere. And of those families, 34 are in Revere. Indeed, Housing Families Inc. has been part of the Revere community fabric for over a decade, operating a shelter at Walnut Place.

Caring for the most vulnerable: Housing Families helps the homeless with their struggle

Since the start of the “great recession”, households in the lower 30% of income distribution have been affected the greatest by job loss.

With an average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Boston hovering over $2,000 per month, it’s easy to see why so many families are now homeless.

“We’re focused on improving the lives of these families whose security and stability and safety net have been ripped out from underneath them,” said Patty Kelly, Outreach Coordinator for Housing Families of Malden, a nonprofit organization working to end family homelessness.

Report says financial gulf is widening - Social inequities, housing needs cited
